Class Summary for Mar 13, 2022 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-6: Slokas 7 - 9

Summarized by Sridhar.V

The class started off with our Omkar routine followed by prayers and Pranayama.

We did a recap from our last class 02.27.2022 where in verses 1-6 from Chapter 6 were discussed.

We looked at a comparison of a Bhogi, Yogi, Sanyasi and a Gyani.

A Bhogi is a person always in desires and cultivating more, and moving in the opposite direction on the spiritual path.
A yogi is reducing desires, and thereby moving in the right direction. A sanyasi is able to eliminate his desires, and a gnani is completely free of any desire.
In the gunas also, there is a progression from tamasic/rajasic for Bhogi to completely satvik for a gyani.
Mind is the most agitated for a Bhogi, and becomes progressively calmer and is the calmest for a gyani.
A Bhogi is most dependent on the external world, and a gyani is the least dependent

We also watched few videos of Gururdev on Chapter 6.

Excerpts of verses 7 ,8 and 9:

Translation of verse 7  :

The yogis who have conquered the mind rise above the dualities(pairs of opposites) heat and cold, joy and sorrow, honor and dishonor.Such yogis remain steadfast and peaceful in their devotion to God.

Commentary/Meaning :

Three pairs of opposites are indicated here as

1. Hot and Cold

2. Joy and Sorrow

3, Honour and Dishonour.

Shree Krishna mentions that  “hot and cold” are stimuli that are experienced at the body level, “pleasure and pain” indicates that all destinies suffer at the mind level and “honor and dishonor”pair of opposites offer no threat of any storm in the intellectual zone of an accomplished individual.

Thus,by these three representative pairs of opposites from the three worlds of the body, the mind and the intellect, Shree Krishna is trying to exhaust all possibilities of obstacles in man’s life.

Translation of verse no 8:

The yogis who are satisfied by knowledge and discrimination(viveka) and have conquered their senses remain undisturbed in all circumstances. They see everything -dirt,stones and gold as the same.

Commentary / Meaning :

An individual who is self controlled and serene, who has constantly come to contemplate upon the nature of the Self as understood from the shastras, through all his circumstances in life becomes filled with a divine satisfaction and becomes and unshakeable Yogi.

According to Shree Krishna, the satisfied contentment which a true Yogi comes to experience is much superior to the thrilled joys experienced in all intense studies.

The knowledge gained through study is indicated as Jnana and the first hand experience gained by the seeker of the Self in himself is called as the Knowledge of direct perception also called as Vijnana.

Translation of verse no 9:

The yogis look upon all as -well wishers, friends, foes, the pious and the sinners-with an impartial intellect .The Yogi who is of equal intellect towards friend, companion, and foe, neutral among enemies and relatives, and impartial between the righteous and sinful,is considered to be the distinguished amongst humans.

Commentary / Meaning :

In the previous verse,it was indicated that the man of perfection develops equal vision as far as things of the world are concerned. The universe is not made of things alone but also beings.

Lord Krishna says that a man of excellence regards all relationships with an equal love and consideration,be they friends or foe, nearest relations or enemies, indifferent or neural. In his equal vision, all of them are equally important and he embraces all of them with the same warmth and ardour.

Suhrin-well-wishers,Mitra-friends,ari- enemies,udaasina-neutral parties,madhyastha-mediators,dvesya-those who are provocative by their bad behaviour,bandhu-relatives,sadhus-3 meanings(noble person who follows dharma, sanyasi or simpleton,papeshu-one who is a sinner.

How can a person have the same attitude towards all of these- Example of sandalwood-When its dry its fragrant and everyone likes it, when it becomes moist and soggy, it emits a foul odour which is not liekable, and the same when its rubbed and is dried again becomes fragrant.

Don’t be judgemental towards people and allow everyone a fair chance.

We also discussed examples of the mindset of individuals who have won a major tournament and lost (Wimbeldon)-

We also discussed the example of a visit to the new York- Federal Reserve  Bank where in all the gold exchnages are stocked and people are allowed to visit the same.

Theme of verses 7,8 and 9 :(Yogi to Gnani)

HOW DOES A GNANI INTERACT WITH THE WORLD:

We used the Yin and yang or yin-yang concept that refers to an ancient Chinese philosophy where-in the opposite forces are seen as interconnected and counterbalancing.

Goes beyond dualities controlling his BMI.

Acts as the constant around whom everything else is changing.

Master and not a slave.

Treats all objects irrespective of value as the same.

Converts the knowledge(external) to wisdom- raw pickle to seasoned pickle.

Treats all people around as the same. Eg:Animal Biscuits.

In everyday interactions,is constantly aware of the knowledge and is not bothered by ups and downs.

We will continue with verses 10,11 and 12  from Chapter 6 in our next class.

Class Summary for Feb 27 , 2022 - Bhagavad gita Chapter-6: Slokas 1 - 6

 Summarized by: Neelima Turga

The class started with Om chanting, Pranayama and Meditation.

We then did a brief recap of last class. Some of the points discussed were how Karma, Bhakti and Gyana yoga go together along with meditation. All are important in attaining the spiritual goal.   In Kaliyuga we need to practice all three as they strengthen each other. There could be some exceptions, when someone attained moksha by following just one path. For example, the sages in the Himalayas may not have done any Karma Yoga in the current birth, but we do not know what they did in the prior births and how far ahead they are on the spiritual path.

Another point discussed was, with Karma Yoga will PORT reduction automatically happen.?  Although this is possible, we don’t know when that could happen. We need to make a conscious effort to reduce this. This will help us get rid of the extra baggage faster. Once on the spiritual path where the lower goals are substituted by higher goals, reduction of PORT could happen to a certain extent automatically. But a conscious effort to reduce will give us more time and energy to progress. It helps plug the energy drains that can happen while in grihastha ashrama. PORT can be a measure for how we are proceeding on the spiritual path. . A journal can be created to keep track of the PORT reduction. This will help identify what is dropped, and what has taken its place.

We then watched three videos of Gurudev on chapter 6.

Verse 4 –  How will one know when my mind is under my control. Once I know it's in control, I can give up the obligatory duties and focus on contemplation and quieting the mind more and more.  Once there are no more sensual desires and when there is no more indulgence in sense objects, then you can say the mind is under your control. Once all desires are given up, the mind comes into control.

Verse 5 – Lift yourself by yourself. That's the only way. No teacher or guru can do that for you. Having lifted a little high, do not again drop down. Maintain the improvement.

Everyone has to go on their own spiritual path. The Guru can only provide encouragement and guidance, and not take him on the path.

For example, one can look at Tripadvisor where everyone posts their own experience.  It can just serve as a guide. But each person has his own unique experience in his travel. Similarly, everyone's journey on the spiritual path is their own. It cannot be compared to others, nor can someone else traverse this path for you.

Without self-effort and will, progress will not happen.

Verse 6 – You are your own friend or relative. You are also your own enemy that will pull you down.

For an individual who has integrated the mind and the intellect, his mind is the greatest friend in this path. The mind and intellect are expected to work in harmony. But there is often conflict between them because of desire or anger. When this conflict arises, the same mind becomes an enemy on the spiritual path. The mind will not let you progress because of all the disturbances it creates.

You are your own friend when you are fully integrated. When you are conflicted, you become your own enemy. If you are in a balanced state of mind, you are able to work efficiently. But if something takes over, you become your own enemy. It could even be one emotion or desire that causes this conflict. Your mind becomes your enemy when you are constantly living either in the past or in the future. It is important to always stay in the present.

Subjective analysis :

One should not be a bhogi, who is always desiring and taking. Yogi is a person who is able to let go more. We need to think if we are always being a bhogi or are giving back as a yogi.

We looked at a comparison of a Bhogi, Yogi, Sanyasi and a Gyani.

  • A Bhogi is a person always in desires and cultivating more, and moving in the opposite direction on the spiritual path.
  • A yogi is reducing desires, and thereby moving in the right direction. A sanyasi is able to eliminate his desires, and a gnani is completely free of any desire.
  • In the gunas also, there is a progression from tamasic/rajasic for Bhogi to completely satvik for a gyani.
  • Mind is the most agitated for a bhogi, and becomes progressively calmer and is the calmest for a gyani.
  • A bhogi is most dependent on the external world, and a gyani is the least dependent.
  • The focus of a bhogi is mostly in the future as he is always desirous for something or the other, but for people progressing on the spiritual path, the focus is more and more, only in the present.

There is a lot of dissipation of energy when a person is constantly dwelling either in the past or the future. The person thus becomes inefficient in whatever he is doing in the present.

Class Summary for Feb 13 , 2022 - Bhagavad gita Chapter-6: ISlokas 1 - 6

 Summarized by: Shailesh Vyas

Started with meditation, anulom vilom.

Recap

  • In the first six verses we talked about Yogi and Sanyasi, they are not the people who want to run away from their duties.
  • Renunciation of Sankalpa
    • We should not have any desire when we want to be sanyasi.
    • By attaching to higher ideas. We are capable and full. Glass half empty or half full, look at the brighter side.
  • How can you use BMI to evolve higher? Same BMI could be our enemy if we don’t utilize it properly.
    • Example of Japan v/s Africa, where even if Japan is not rich with resources it rose itself to superpower.
    • The Mind can be your best friend or your enemy.
    • Spiritual knowledge is something you can gain by yourself.
      • e.g. Mountain climbing, the coach can only encourage, one has to carry himself to the top.
    • Man should uplift himself by himself.

Theme -
Chapter 6 - Verse 1-6 - Yogi to Gnani
  • Bahiranga Sadhanas - General preparation to be practised daily for successful meditation.
  • Many kinds of meditation - for Sindhis, chakra, health, self improvement (yoga Nidra), mystical experiences, ESP BG itself has two kinds -
    • Shravanam leading to Mananam
    • Nidhidhyasanam
  • Extolling the Karma Yogi as a Sanyasi v/s Niragni
  • Patanjali Ashtanga Yoga - first two steps are Yama (don’ts) and Niyama (do’s) are Karma Yoga
  • Karma yogi is the real meditator because s/he is a Sanyasi - mentally renounced worry at a moment’s notice.
  • Process is gradual - withdrawal from responsibilities and focus on self enquiry.
  • Detachment is a sign of (spiritual) maturity. Careful: does not mean uncaring, unloving person!
  • Verse 5-6: very strong argument in favor of free-will. Atma is the BMI complex (not Jivatama or Paramatma).
  • PORT reduction (Possessions, Obligations - aka responsibilities, relationships and transactions) another definition of the process of becoming a Sanyasi.
  • Three factors needed to progress on spiritual journey -
    • 1. Belief in free will
    • 2. Self confidence
    • 3. Self Integration

Discussion
  • Lot of people do Tapas for repenting or acquisition of something.
    • People divert their energy to get something.
    • This chapter is about Dhyana Yoga.
    • Dhyana is not about hardship ..
    • You are working on realization.
  • Types of Meditations (meant Tapas in this context to acquire something)
    • Yogi Paramananda book - Autobiography of Sanyasi
      • One of the examples from his life - One time he touched the train ticket and was able to produce it when asked, even though he never bought it.
    • Asura also had Siddhis, but they used it to gain powers.
    • Kundalini Yoga
    • Chakra meditation - Seven or Nine chakras
    • Self Improvement
    • Yoga Nidra - Someone can introduce a different program into you. It's a kind of meditation.
    • Mystical experiences - It can work for some and can go in the opposite for others. It can off-balance you.
    • You can use meditation .. you can learn to see the future.
    • Almost each of them is materialistic in nature.
  • Getting knowledge itself is a kind of Meditation we talked about in the first five chapters. Examples like -
    • Attending class
    • Making notes
    • Posting these notes.
  • Second aspect is Nidhidhyasam. That's what we will read in Chapter 6.
  • Nirangni -
    • Every household used to have agni that will never be extinguished. Even a person who died will use the same household fire to burn their body.
    • Nirangni is the person who has given up that fire, he will not cook on his own, he will beg to meet his end needs.
  • Karma Yogi performs his action with detachment, you perform the action as they happen. You have to be unattached.
    • We perform a lot of actions with emotions, in turn attachment.
    • True Karma Yogi is the real Sanyasi.
    • Both Arjuna and Krishna are Grihsta, even Vyasa was Grihista.
  • Ashtanga Yoga is very close to what we are learning right now
    • Eight steps
    • First 2 are like 10 commandments of Hinduism (5 do’s and 5 don’ts) like do not steal etc.
    • If you follow those you are closer to becoming Karma Yogi.
    • Karma Yogi is a real meditator.
  • Process to become Karma Yogi -
    • You're not uncaring, un-emotional ..
    • Transition from what to So what is usually fast.
    • Smaller disturbances - What used to take days to recover now takes minutes.
    • Bigger ones like loss of family etc are still longer.
  • Free will
    • Without your free will you will not be able to progress in spiritual journey.
    • Three blessings you need
      • Ishvara’s blessing,
      • Guru’s blessing and
      • Shashtra’s blessing
    • However, most important is your free will. God can only help, if you help yourself.
    • Self Confidence - We think, we can or cannot do this
    • Self Integration
  • PORT reduction is similar to FIR
    • Reduce your Possessions like Homes, Car
      • More possession you have, it will take your focus away from spiritual journey.
    • Reduce your obligations (responsibility)
      • Pass it on to next generation
    • Reduce Relationships
      • It comes with obligations like events in their life (birthdays).
      • This reduces the number of transactions.
    • Everyone has a different time in life .. this is to keep in the mind.
  • Question -
    • PORT reduction v/s Karma Yoga?
      • With Karma Yoga, we learned to live in the worldly order but renounce the desires and fruits of your actions? In initial chapters Karma Yoga is considered higher. In fact it was referenced many times that you do not need to take Sanyasa. However with PORT reduction, are we advising otherwise?
        • There are different ashrams in life. At some point, we are advised to reduce transactions. This helps us focus our time and energy on higher causes.
    • Can we prioritize something over other instead of reduction? Like Sunday class priority over friends' parties.
      • Prioritization can only work if you have few things .. it doesn’t work if you have a lot of things. You need to reduce.
      • To successfully meditate one has to reduce the number of transactional activities in mind.
    • Ashtanga Yoga
      • First step is only about physical fitness .. the remaining seven are way beyond physical fitness.
      • By the end you can depart this body as you want.
  • Meditation helps you to focus.

Video
  • Video 113 - Fragrance of Sweat
    • Results of action -
      • Thinking, Will I be complemented?
      • All actions are in the present, thinking, agitated or being anxious about unnecessary worry about the future, I am wasting my time.
      • Not worrying about results you enjoy your action, it brings excellence out of you.
    • He is the Sanyasi, He is the Karma Yogi who renunciate fruits of action.
    • Lord loves the fragrance of sweat rather than perfume.
  • Video
    • Rider v/s Ride.
    • To tame a horse you throw your body on top, but once you are on top, you can tame it.

Ended class with Meditation.

 Summarized by: Bala Dhandapani

The class started with Pranayama, meditation and prayers.

Recent event regarding inauguration of Ramanuja Charya’s statue – Equality statue and its relevance on Moksha was discussed.  Specifically, Ramanuja Charya’s teaching was that anyone who does Dhyanam and Sanyasa Yoga will attain Moksha (the person does not have to be a male and does not have to be from a higher varna as believed prior to Ramanuja Charya).

Quick recap of Chapter 5 (True Renunciation – Karma Sanyasa Yoga):

Following points were revisited.

  •  Different between Material knowledge and Spiritual Knowledge -

Material knowledge is acquired while one lives through Spiritual knowledge

  • Five steps to Brahman

Karma, Karma yoga, Upasana, Upasana Yoga and Gyana Yoga.

  • Difference between Karma Yoga and Karma sanyasa yoga

Karma Yoga- perform your duty without being attached to the fruits of the action

Karma sanyasa Yoga – giving up desires and the doer ship.

  • 12 yagnas and 5 key ones

After the recap of Chapter 5, Chapter 6 Dhyana Yoga was introduced

Chapter 6 – The Yoga of Meditation -Dhyana Yoga

Chapter 6 can be roughly split into the following sections

  • Verses 43-47 – Yogi attains Moksha – the goal – Vedantic Meditation (knowledge churning – turning into inwards)

Video of Gurudev on Chapter 6 introduction was viewed by the class

  • Student (Vidyarthi, Vidya - knowledge, arthi – beggar) comes to a teacher for learning,  Knowledge cannot be passed on (not like a tea cup), teacher puts teachings in a right way and gets into the student’s ears.
  • Heaving heard from the Guru, the student’s mind has to re-evaluate based on what was heard, assimilate the knowledge and get the mind ready to obtain the knowledge.

Slokas 1,2 and 3

Summary:

-One who merely abandons their duties and yajnas are not true sanyasis.  Those who perform their duties without desiring the results of their actions are true sanyasis

-for one to become a yogi one has to renounce wordly desires (Sanyasa)

-For one who wants to advance in yoga, action is the means.  For one who has advanced in yoga, renouncing the action/tranquility in meditation is the means.

Note:  this is a recap/reiteration from Chapter 5 – verses 22-29

Slokas 4, 5 and 6

Summary

-One is advanced in yoga after renouncing all desires and is not attached to sense objects or actions.

-you should raise/elevate yourself by yourself through the power of your mind and not let others sink you down.  You (mind) are your own best friend and your worst enemy

-For those who have conquered their mind, it is their friend.  If not conquered, mind behaves like your enemy

Theme of the above verses is how to elevate from a Yogi to a Gnani. Attitude in the action, elevating from Karma yoga to Karma Sanyasa yoga to Jnana yoga makes a Yogi  to Gnani

Bhagawad Gita helps with the mobilization of our internal resources and harnessing the resources.  Example between Africa and Japan was illustrated.  Japan is an advanced, small country, with limited resources and face natural calamities, by harnessing the limited resources they became a super power.  Whereas, Africa is an underdeveloped continent even though it is large in size with large resources.  They remain underdeveloped since the resources are not harnessed appropriately.
