Class Summary for Jan 28, 2024 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-8 ver 14 - 16

 Summarized by Sree Sekhar Palaparthy:

The class started off with our regular routine followed by prayers and Pranayama & meditation.
We started the class discussing about opinions on the Ram Mandir Pratishta ceremony that
happened recently
We discussed around why this ceremony was required or why it has a great significance to our
culture.
 US news channels covered only part of the history starting their timeline back in 90’s,
which isn’t a right perspective. They need to go back in the history to 500 yrs back to
cover the complete story (i.e when original temple existed)
 All other faiths/religions do celebrate their inaugural events across the world, and
everyone is fine with that. However, when same level of event happens within Hindu
faith, some people including Indians, thinks that there is no need for this roadshow.
 This Pratishtha ceremony was made more of a socio-political event than recognizing the
key factor behind it about celebrating Indian culture
 This event wasn’t necessarily for Hindus, as such. It was for mankind who believed Ram
as a noble/righteous person, and came to celebrate
 There was lot of Sankalpa which went into this , as there were few who went on Moun
Vrat for 30 yrs, and few fasted for months, or even died for this to happen
We also discussed few points against the Pratishta ceremony/ temple re-establishment itself took
place
 We discussed how the path leading to Pratishta shouldn’t have involved in any form of
violence, as that cannot be still justified
 We also discussed how Ahimsa, doesn’t mean not retaliating against Adharma

We did a quick recap from our last class of verses 14,15 16 and 17 of Chapter 8.

We watched Gurudev’s video for Verse # 14
 Those who direct all of their thoughts towards HIM would attain the liberation without
any effort
 If one practices it, would get this effortlessly
 Gurudev talks about the analogy of effort that goes into sleeping. One gives up all the
anxieties to slide into sleep, similarly one with consistent practice of focusing on HIM
alone, can liberate
 One needs to know who they really are and then just lead their like playing a game

Class Summary for Jan 21, 2024 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-8 ver 14 - 16

Summarized by Sridhar V:

The class started off with our Omkar routine followed by prayers and Pranayama & meditation.

We did a recap from our last class of verses 10,11 12 and 13 of Chapter 8.

We chanted verses 14 through16 and discussed the explanation & meaning.

Excerpts of verses 14,15 and 16

Analysis and Theme:

  • Constant remembrance of Brahman at all times.
  • Love versus attachment
  • Intellect guides the mind.
  • Sense Control.
  • Constancy of pursuit.
  • Clarity of thought- Intellect and choice-temporarily gives up desires and attachment.
  • Intelligent vs power of intellect.
  • Mahatma’s have realized that they are complete & full- Sense of contentment.
  • Path of no return (materialistic desires) vs path of no return (practicing detachment).

Excerpts of verses 14,15 and 16

Lord Krishna says to Arjuna – O Partha- I am easily attainable to those Yogi’s who always think of me with exclusive devotion due to constant absorption in Me.

To the one who is ever steadfast in the life divine and remembers Me, always and daily, with a mind unshuttered,to him I am easily attainable.

Lors Krishna is very emphatic and with all the strength insists that the divine consciousness must be maintained by the seeker constantly and continuously all through the day and just not as an occasional activity.

Having Attained Me,these Mahatma’s(great souls) do not again take birth, which is the house of pain and in non-eternal, as they have reached the highest perfection- Moksha.

Lord Krishna says that , he who has through the process of constant meditation of the Self and who has during his lifetime, learnt to control all his senses, to regulate the mind and the heart,to control and arrest all pranas in the intellect- he comes to directly identify himself with the Infinite and the Eternal- and thus shall no more come back into the cycle of birth-rebirth.

Lord Krishna says that all the material world rolls up to Brahma- which is still subject to rebirth- but the one who reaches me- O Kaunteya- has no rebirth and is liberated.

The theory of gradual liberation (krama mukti) accepted by Vedanta says that karma accompanied by meditation takes the ego to the realm of the creator(Brahma-loka)where at the end of he kalpa(cycle of broth and death) it merges with the Supreme. Even in Brahma-loka, it is necessary that the ego must follow all the spiritual advices of the Creator and through constant contemplation earn the total liberation. Hence reaching Brahma-loka doesn’t guarantee everyone a ticket to liberation as some of them will have to again come back to exhaust their Vasana’s at the end of the cycle before merging with the Supreme Self.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theme:

  • Pravritti vs Nivritti - These are the two paths, light and dark, considered to be the eternal paths of the universe. Departing by one, rebirth is not attained but departing by the other, rebirth is a must.
  • Karya vs Akarya-
  • Bhaya vs Abhaya-
  • Bandham vs Moksham- Bondage and Liberation.

Story No 1: Raja Janak and his dream

Raja Janak after having eaten a filling lunch, King Janak fell asleep and dreamed he had lost a battle, his kingdom and ran for his life to a forest. Now he was hungry and was a beggar looking for food.

Extremely hungry and thirsty, he desperately approached a hut from which an old lady  gave him rice & Dal (Lentils) and told him to cook his own meal. King cooked food and as he was about to eat a dog came and snatched his food and ran away.

King suddenly awoke in a sweat. He was in his quiet, serene palace, with a full stomach and servants fanning him. He was then confronted with the question of  What was real?  Was he a beggar, as in the nightmare, or he is a king?

With this question, King Janak assembled all of his advisors. All attempted to give an explanation, but Janak was not satisfied with any of their answers.

Then a young crooked boy Ashtavakra  entered the court and surprised everyone with the answer: “King Janaka, neither beggar nor emperor is real. You alone are real. You, yourself, are the truth. The you who was present as pure consciousness in the dream state playing the role of the beggar and who is present in the waking state playing the role of the king, this you who witnessed both these states, is your true entity.

Story No 2: Vali’s liberation at the hands of Lord Ram

Rama's slaying of Vali had a special significance. In the beginning, Vali argued with Rama about his killing. Rama explained to him about the various reasons and how everything was pre-ordained. He then asked Vali that he can take back the arrow that felled him but Vali was by then convinced that its better for him to die at the hands of Lord Ram and be granted Moksha.

Story No 3: Pandavas- Yudhisthira and poor man seeking help.

Yudhisthira asks a beggar seeking alms to come the next day as it was very late at night. On this, Bheema rejoices that Yudhisthira his brother, has conquered death! He is sure that he will be around the next day to give.

Yudhisthira gets the message!

One does not know really whether one will be there tomorrow to give! The time to give therefore is now

Story No 4:  Raam Naam more powerful than Raam Naam

Once Narad Muni tried to test Hanuman ji.

After defeating demon Ravaan, when Lord Raam became the king of Ayodhya. All those who had accompanied Lord Rama to Ayodhya were going to all the elders and every saint present there to touch their feet and get their blessings. Lord Hanuman was not only a staunch devotee of Lord Rama, but also purely innocent at heart.

While present there as a guest in the court of Lord Rama, Narad Muni secretly told Lord Hanuman that while touching the feet of all the sages present there, he should not touch the feet of Sage Vishvamitra as he had been a king earlier, thus he was not fully a sage.

Observing diligently the orders of Narad Muni, he touched the feet of all the sages, except Vishvamitra. Vishvamitra was the Guru of Lord Rama. Unlike what Narad Muni had expected, sage Vishvamitra did not feel bad about it and took the mistake of Hanuman ji lightly. But Narad Muni instigated Sage Vishvamitra against Hanuman ji. Enraged by Narad Muni's words, sage Vishvamitra became too angry on Hanuman ji ordered Lord Rama to kill him.

Following his Guruji's order…Shri Raam attacked Hanuman ji.

Hanuman ji started chanting 'Raam Raam'. And the magic of the words was such that even Lord Rama's constant attacks could not affect him. Raam nama became the powerful invincible armour of Hanuman ji. Determined, Lord Raam finally attacked him with the Brahmastra.

However, the powerful chant of Lord Rama's name and the power of Lord Hanuman's devotion towards him saved him from this most powerful weapon as well.

Story No 5: Plight of a Man- Analogy story

There is a story that depicts the plight of mankind,

Once a man was chased by an elephant in a forest. Seeing no respite, he jumped down a pit . He looked up and  saw there is a big python snake that is at the bottom of the pit. Immediately he sees a rope and clings on to it and climbs a little bit up out of reach of the python. He also notices that there are 2 rats(one black and one white) that are nibbling away at the rope constantly.

He knows that the elephant is waiting to kill him and two rats, one black and one white, were slowly nibbling the rope he was hanging on to. He understood that very soon the rope would fall to the ground where the python is waiting.

Suddenly a drop of honey fell on his face. He pulled his tongue out and licked it. There was a honeycomb atop a tree that was far above on the top.

Forgetting the obvious (elephant, snakes, rats,), he just adjusted his tongue to get drops of honey straight on his tongue.

Now, he was happy indeed forgetting his precarious situation temporarily.

This analogy from Mahabharata perfectly fits a common man.

The man represents the common man or ourself. We are stuck in this precarious situation of this material world (samsara). Death (elephant) is chasing us continuously; it will not leave us without devouring. The black and white rats represent night and day respectively. They are slowly reducing our age. The python snake represent the big obstacles in life.. The sweet honey represents the pleasures’ of this world in its myriad forms.

If only we can focus on Lord Krishna, we can save ourselves a lot of trouble but we are too attached to the drops of dripping honey.

In the next class, we would watch Swamiji’s video of verses 14 15 and 16.

Theme/Discussion
  • Pre requirement for meditation
    • Freedom from emotions or desire based activities.
    • Brahamcharya - saying No to anything that comes into the way of attaining Brahman.
  • Control over gates, not shutting down gates.
  • Recite OM constantly, so you can do so during the last breath.
  • Definition of Brahamcharya - If anything that intervene in your path of attaining Brahman should be controlled.
  • Continue to practice OM whenever you get chance.
    • American Navy does well in wartime because war is a chaos and American practice chaos in daily life.
  • When you are worried about something, it always stays in your back of mind. Replace that remembrance with OM.
  • Subconscious helps you get answer. Sometimes we think worrying helps in getting the answer, but actually it's subconscious that helps you.
  • We may need to give variety, like just saying OM may get boring than listen to Bhagwat story.
  • Mind is not easy to tame. It will think of food during fast.
  • Give variety with moderation.
  • Katho Upanishad - Description of Brahman
    • One that is immortal
      • Both Saguna and Nirguna are immortal
      • With Saguna - Two-step process for Moksha (First to Brahamloka than you merge)
      • Since there is no rebirth, there is no reborn, even in new world.
  • Realization is burning all Karmas.
  • One who has studied scripture and focussed single-mindedly will attain Moksha.
  • With Moksha as top goal, everything else will become immaterial.
  • Krishna Gati and Shukla Gati - there are two eternal paths by which the person after death goes to the next world
    • Krishna Gati (Dark path) - By this path, one keep coming back again and again.
    • Shukla Gati (Bright path) - One who goes to Brahamloka. By this path, one will never return to the earth to take birth.
  • Ashtanga Yoga - Eight-step process and the last step is Divyakalpa Samadhi.
    • At the time of death, yogi who practiced Ashtanga Yoga, they can bring entire energy to heart and bring it up to Shushkima Nadi and lose concisouness from top of the head.
    • For most people, life exit from mouth or eyes or other gates.
  • e.g. One time, there was a devotee of God and Shiv & Parvati wanted to give liberation to him. They say, if he says Apa than Lord Shiv will give him liberation and if he says Ama than Lord Parvati. Since that desciple didn't practice throughout the life, he end up saying Ayo.
  • Karma Yoga will help you in cleansing of mind.
    • e.g. DUI - Court often ask you to do community service. So lot of system believe Nishkama Karma may help you in reducing Vasanas.
  • Subjective Analysis - Practicing the skills and arms at the time of battle is not very helpful.
Swamiji’s Video and discussions
  • Chapter 8 - Verse 11 - Roadmap Part 1
    • Link to Video
    • Very briefly, I shall now explain to you, that which is a theme of Veda, those who have realized it declare it imperishable, that which true seeker enter after purifying the mind.
    • However, once said, Brahman cannot be explained. That's true, but I can explain to you the roadmap to the destination, and you need to experience yourself.
    • e.g. I can give you roadmap to your trip of Niagra, you need to trace the path to experience yourself.
  • Chapter 8 - Verse 12 - Roadmap Part 2
    • Link to Video
    • It is to be experienced within yourself by yourself.
    • All nine doors needs to be in control. All equipment of sense organ, through which your mind get distracted, needs to be in control.
    • How to control - In the devotion, when mind turns towards him, there is no more mind leaking out through sense organ.
    • When the mind is held into intellect and intellect is continuously contemplating on the nature of God. Intellect will not let mind go into the sense organ.
    • Vasanas are exhausted. Mind is not receiving stimuli from outside. Intellect will contemplate steadily the nature of reality.
    • Not only sense organs, but also organs of actions, are in control.
    • This state of sitting, turning your entire thought towards higher, is called "Yogadharna" (living Yoga).
  • Chapter 8 - Verse 13 - Roadmap Part 3
    • Link to Video -
    • Let the mind continuously chant OM.
    • OM is not a name of God, it stands as sound or symbol of God.
    • e,g, people call their spouse Honey, and they get a picture of their spouse.
    • You need to whisper this sound as background.
    • This ensures mind doesn't run away from one thing to another.
    • Such an individual, when leaves the body contemplating at higher while leaving the body, reaches the supreme state.

Takers

Givers

World created for our pleasure

World meant for all

Always dissatisfied

Content

Derivation hence grab

Abundance hence share

Profoundly lonely

Blend & harmonies

Wanton destruction

All thrive.  Plenty for everyone

Insecure

Secure

Believe they are right

Open to correction

Desires increase

Desires reduce

Theme:

  • You are what you think - so THINK of the HIGHER, and act as per your DHARMA
  • How?  Abhyasa yoga - Practice of Karma yoga, Bhakti yoga and Giana yoga along with Meditation
  • Death is the cross-over from the 3 states to the 4th plane
  • Who is this BRAHMAN?

Kavim - pure consciousness

Puranam - ancient

Anushasitaram - law of causation

Anoraniyamsam - subtlest of all

Sarvasya Dhataram - supporter

Achintya Rupam - formless

Adityavarnam - self-effulgent

Tamatha Parastat- beyond ignorance

Videos:

Chapter 8, v9:  Continuously contemplate on him.  God supports all.  Support doesn’t mean as if by weight.  Support in the sense of being the ‘very material cause’ of your gross material body and your subtle thoughts.  Examples - cotton in cloth, gold in ornaments, sea in the waves, etc.

Chapter 8, v10:  He is the ruler of everything.  Beyond the intellect.  Search and seek for what is illumining the intellect.  He is pure knowledge.  He is beyond all darkness (and light).

Chapter 8, v11:  Concentrating Prana.  With mind unwavering

5 Pranas are the expressions of life in you.  [Didn’t capture the 5 pranas]

Prana, Alana, - these are used in puja.

Chapter 8 - Meditation - verb or noun?

Meditation is a state of mind that you arrive at with contemplation and effort.

  • It is hard to do this at the end of our lives.  We need to imbed this into our daily routine.  Even something as simple as substituting a little bit of contemplation during a break rather than checking social media, listening to the radio, etc.
  • If we can invest and ‘program’ ourselves with the right type of spiritual practice, the preparation will ease our acceptance of our eventual death.  And hopefully we can burn our Vaasa as

VEDANTA CHANGES EMOTION:

  • Selfish -> unselfish
  • earnest -> strength
  • Liability -> asset

We get confused between Love and Attachment:

LOVE

ATTACH

Gain

Lose

Bring out best

Bring out worst

Happy

Unhappy

Build teams

Distrust teams

  • Break free of the chains - attachment creates chains.
  • This is hardest for us with our children.

As given in Chapter 18 - 3 things that you shouldn’t leave:

  • Yagna (rituals)
  • Tapas (contemplation)
  • Danam (as you give, you will decrease your load)

We have to do Karma, Bhakti and Gnana yogas hand-in-hand

Class Summary for Dec 10, 2023 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-8 ver 1-6

 Summarized by Sree Sekhar Palaparthy:

We started the class with prayer and pranayama. We discussed the 2 questions which were given as exercise in our

last class

1) Why is Warren Buffett’s focus is still to make money

2) Identify 1-3 people who does not feel insecure at all.

Why is Warren Buffett’s focus is still to make money

 He makes more money so that he can give back more to the community

 His earning is not entire egoless but he wants to show how good/smart he is

 His lifestyle reflects western lifestyle i.e searching for meaning for oneself

 To keep himself busy; What else would he be doing , if he didn’t continue to do what he is good at

 In other terms, if you are enjoying what you are doing and not doing a job, that’s when you can consider

that one has retired. So, in a way, we can interpret that Warren.B has retired 30/35 years back, as he isn’t

just doing a job

 His primary focus to earn money is to serve others/for charity.

o He couldn’t find a single place where he could find the impact of money spent for charity, except

Bill  & Mellinda foundation, hence he donates to their organization

 Is he following Swadharma?

 Maybe he found that investing is his Swadharma and he is continuing to do what he is good at without any expectation/but one cannot tell for sure and only he would know

Identify 1-3 people who does not feel insecure at all

 We discussed how difficult /impossible it is to find a single person whom we know personally, who is

completely secure

 Someone who comes somewhat closer to being completely secured, would be the health workers during

Covid time.

o We discussed about a specific example of a health worker who was serving patients by putting

herself into risk of dying, but never felt that she was insecure. At that point, she wasn’t doing her

work as an obligation

o However, even such a person could be still insecure in other spheres of her life

 How does a Gyani be secure at all time?

o Though they show sympathy and empathize with others as needed, within, they are always

secured, knowing the real truth of existence

We then watched Gurudev’s videos on Verse 9, 10, 11

Verse 9:

o Unknown can’t be defined with another unknown, but has to be defined with reference to a

known

o If we know the distance between point A and B is 5 m, we can’t discover any information about

point C

o In same way, all that we know is about BMI

o The Unknow or HIM, cannot be defined with the known BMI, but HE can only be indicated (give a

direction)

o Definition of God or truth us a direction towards HIM; Kirtan is to turn towards HIM and search

for HIM

Verse 10:

o From this verse onwards, God talks about 8 such terms which determines the direction of mental

attention/spirit of searching and discovering HIM

o Kavim – Omniscient - One who knows everything

o What we all know is very insignificant

Verse 11:

o Purana – Most ancient ; HE is father of time; From HIM, the concept of time even emerged

o Anushasitaram - HE is the ruler of the world

We concluded the class with prayer and will continue to watch other videos in the next class
