Class Summary for Mar 23, 2025 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-9 Slokas 24-27

Summarized by: Sridhar.V

The class started off with our Omkar routine followed by prayers and Pranayama & meditation.

We started off reciting the verses 24,25,26 and 27 of Chapter 9.

Subjective Analysis:

  • Verse 24:

I am the enjoyer and the only Lord of all sacrifices. But those who fail to realize My divine nature must be reborn.

Lord Krishna emphasizes that worshipping the Supreme Lord directly leads to liberation, while worshipping other deities or engaging in rituals results in temporary rewards and eventual return to the cycle of birth and death.

Worshipping the Supreme Lord directly is the path to liberation, while worshipping other deities or engaging in rituals results in temporary rewards and eventual return to the cycle of birth and death.

In this verse, Lord Krishna explains the implications of worshipping different entities by revealing the varieties of destinations attained.  He gives this knowledge to help us conclude that to reach the highest level of spiritual evolution we must worship the Supreme.

Those who worship the gods, ancestors, or other beings, ultimately worship the Supreme Lord, but in a misguided way. They are seeking temporary rewards and do not realize the true nature of the Supreme

Verse 25:

Worshippers of the celestial gods take birth amongst the celestial gods, worshippers of the ancestors go to the ancestors, worshippers of ghosts take birth amongst such beings, and My devotees come to Me alone.

  • Those who are devoted to the gods go to the gods, those who are devoted to ancestors go to the ancestors, and those who are devoted to the spirits go to the spirits. But those who are devoted to the Supreme Lord come to Me.

  • Verse 26:

If one offers to Me with devotion a leaf, a flower, a fruit, or even water, I delightfully partake of that item offered with love by My devotee in pure consciousness.

Having established the benefits of worshipping the Supreme, Shree Krishna now explains how easy it is to do so.  In the worship of the devatās and the ancestors, there are many rules to propitiate them, which must be strictly followed.  But God accepts anything that is offered with a loving heart.  If you have only a fruit, offer it to God, and He will be pleased.  If there is no fruit available, offer Him a flower.  If it is not the season for flowers, offer God a mere leaf; even that will suffice, provided it is a gift of love.  If leaves are also scarce, make an offering of water, which is available everywhere, but ensure again that you do it with devotion

The word used in the verse is prayatātmanaḥ, implying, “I accept the offerings of those whose hearts are pure.”

It is the bhakti of the devotee that is pleasing to God, and not the worth of the offering.

  • Verse 26:

Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you offer as oblation to the sacred fire, whatever you bestow as a gift, and whatever austerities you perform, O son of Kunti, do them as an offering to Me

In the previous verse, Lord Krishna stated that all objects should be offered to Him.  In this verse, He says that all actions should also be offered to Him.  Whatever social duties one may be engaged in, whatever Vedic rites one may perform, whatever vows and austerities one may observe, should all be offered mentally to the Supreme Lord.

Devotion shouldn't be confined to temples or rituals but should permeate every aspect of daily life.

The act of offering is not merely a formality, but a constant awareness that we are working for the Lord's pleasure, not for personal gain. By offering actions, one becomes free from the bonds of action and their results, ultimately leading to liberation and union with the Supreme.

THEME:

  •  Suffering is Real but the cause is imaginary.
  • Life is Illusory.
  • Consistency of Purpose:
  • Act with heart and Soul:

Bhokta: Jivatma- which is the true enjoyer of all the experiences in life.

UBS- Uninteruppted Brahman Supply (similar to UPS)

We will obtain whatever we pursue with full devotion and so we need to chose the purpose wisely.

Lord provides us with a very simple method- A leaf, A flower, A fruit or just water. He never mentions or desires any thing expensive like gold, dollars or coins as such.

Symbolically- Leaf is for our attitude, Flowers are like our vasanas, Fruits are the results of all of our actions and water stands for life/body (as 70% of human body  is water).

Attitude of GIVING is the key aspect.

All aspects of our life we should treat it as an offering to the LORD.

Stories and other related discussions:

Story No 1:

John D. Rockefeller was once the world's wealthiest individual and the first billionaire

By the age of 50, he was the richest man in the country. His entire life, from his decisions to his relationships, was focused on building his personal power and wealth.

However, at 53, Rockefeller's health deteriorated drastically. He suffered immense pain, lost all his hair, and could barely eat anything other than soup and crackers. Despite his wealth, he was miserable. His physicians predicted he wouldn't live another year.

Facing his mortality, Rockefeller had an epiphany. He realized that his vast wealth was meaningless if he couldn't take it with him. Recognizing this, he made a significant decision.

He called his attorneys, accountants, and managers, declaring his intention to devote his wealth to hospitals, research, and charitable causes. This led to the creation of the Rockefeller Foundation, which funded major medical discoveries.

Remarkably, once Rockefeller began to give back, his health improved dramatically. Although expected to die at 53, he lived until the age of 98.

Rockefeller discovered the power of gratitude and philanthropy, giving away the majority of his wealth.

Story No 2:

MD of a large organization who was earning a huge sum of money annually was shortsighted and often micromanaged the small expenses of his peon in his endeavor to save money. This shows how a person despite being so wealthy himself is so shortsighted and miserly in his attitude towards others in life which is not a good example.

Story No 3:.

In Germany in a large chemical factory, where in it spawned several hundred acres, the employees who came late for work were penalized for their tardiness.

However the employees who reported to work early and had the time to park their vehicle and reach their work area, used to park their car farthest and walk along thinking that the person who were to reach later closer to the work timing needed the space in front so that he doesn’t show up late and get penalized.

The situation and circumstances are similar pretty much everywhere but the thought process is what distinguishes the noble from the ordinary.

We also watched a few videos of Gurudev towards the end on verses 24,25 and 26 and discussed the explanation & meaning.

Message and Key Pointers from the videos:

I am the Lord of any action and also the enjoyer of the transaction.

The encounter between BMI and OET are called actions.

Every action-the end result has to be either joy or sorrow and there cannot be any other 3rd dimension to it.

All of us living in this world ultimately end up becoming what we think and we are all products of the past.

If we regularly and consistently think about the LORD then we spend our time in contemplation and meditation. Whatever efforts, intensity and consistency we exhaust our time in external efforts using OET, if we channelize the same and focus on it internally, then we can experience the LORD, the infinite, the immutable and the Permanent.

In the next class we will continue to watch the remaining 2 videos on verses 27 of Gurudev.

Class Summary for Mar 23, 2025 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-9 - Generic discussions

Summarized by: Angila Singh

Today, we chanted three OMs, did meditation, and reviewed key points from our previous classes.

A key takeaway from our discussions was the idea that much of what we do in life—be it marriage, raising children, or pursuing various goals—is fundamentally motivated by our own self-interest.

We also explored a profound moment from the Bhagavad Gita when Arjuna witnesses Lord Krishna in His Vishvarupa (Universal Form). It was noted that Arjuna's ability to see this divine form was due to the Lord lifting the veil of his ignorance; it wasn’t that he gained this vision on his own.

Additionally, we had a thought-provoking discussion about the implications of an accidental death for a Jivanmukta (one who is liberated while still in a body). According to the scriptures, any remaining prarabdha karma (the portion of past karma that manifests in the present life) is erased by the Divine when a Jivanmukta departs.

In contrast, we considered the fate of those who are not Jivanmuktas. For them, if causation is interrupted by an accidental death, the Jivatma (individual soul) enters an intermediate state until it can take birth again, continuing the cycle of causation.

A significant question arose: Do we truly possess free will? While everything can be viewed as God's will, it was asserted that human beings have a degree of free will, especially when compared to animals. Even within the framework of divine will, we exercise free will on a micro level, allowing for personal choice and agency in our lives.

The Paradox of Divine Will and Free Will: Though everything ultimately occurs as per Brahman's will, within the realm of empirical reality, humans experience the sense of making choices. This dichotomy honors both the belief in divine orchestration and the paradoxical experience of individual autonomy. Thus, while God’s will encompasses all, there still exists a space for individual actions and decisions within the manifested world.

Class Summary for Mar 2, 2025 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-9 Slokas- 21-23

Summarized by: Shailesh Vyas.

Started with meditation, anulom vilom.

Recap & Initial Q&A

  • How can Sanchit karma be dissolved in this life, when we are just born to fructify Prarabhda karma?
    • Karmas are associated with subtle identity of self. Once a seeker dissociate itself from his identity, there is no identity to bear the results of these Karmas.
    • Swamiji often shared a story of Abdul with three wives. When Abdul dies, which one will get widow first. If the husband has died, all three are widow at the same time.
  • Being consistent in this spiritual path by doing Sarvanam, Mananam, Nidhidhyasam, one cannot reduce the physical suffering but surely can minimize the mental suffering.
  • Can you drop the "i" yourself by doing Abhyasa and Vairagya?
    • Scriptures suggest continuing on this path and have faith. When a seeker will be close to the final stage, this is where grace will help.

Chapter 9 (Raja Vidhya Guhya Yog - Royal Knowledge and Secret)

Verse 21, 22, 23

  • Verse 21
    • te taṁ bhuktvā swarga-lokaṁ viśhālaṁ
      kṣhīṇe puṇye martya-lokaṁ viśhanti
      evaṁ trayī-dharmam anuprapannā
      gatāgataṁ kāma-kāmā labhante
    • Translation
      • When they have enjoyed the vast pleasures of heaven, the stock of their merits being exhausted, they return to the earthly plane. Thus, those who follow the Vedic rituals, desiring objects of enjoyment, repeatedly come and go in this world.
  • Verse 22
    • ananyāśh chintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate
      teṣhāṁ nityābhiyuktānāṁ yoga-kṣhemaṁ vahāmyaham
    • Translation
      • These are those who always think of me and engage in exclusive devotion to me. To them whose mind is always absorbed in me, I provide what they lack and preserve what they already possess.
  • Verse 23
    • ye ’pyanya-devatā-bhaktā yajante śhraddhayānvitāḥ
te ’pi mām eva kaunteya yajantyavidhi-pūrvakam
    • Translation
      • O son of Kunti, even those devotees who faithfully worship other God also worship me. But they do so by the wrong method.

Theme/Discussion

  • Earth is Karma Bhumi, Heaven is Bhog Bhumi and Bharat is considered as Punya Bhumi.
  • Actions to be performed with intense awareness of the ultimate God.
    • When you seek the ultimate goal, materialistic items are obtained as a by-product.
    • e.g. Marathoner keeps focus on ultimate goal and not on cookies and drinks that are served on the way.
  • We are behaving like a prisoner who gets comfortable in jail after staying there few days, conveniently forgetting that his goal is to seek ultimate freedom.
  • All our effort can get us to the final thought of obtaining Moksha. Beyond this, it just dissolves by his grace.
  • Verse 22 - This one is middle shloka of Bhagwat Gita.
  • Our scriptures talk about both Karma Kanda and Gyan Kanda.
    • e.g. Ramanuja was good at Math but not at other subjects.
    • e.g. Tansen was so good at Music but at some point, he was begging.
    • So keep your focus on ultimate goal, while keep doing other stuff.
  • One may ask - why do we need Karma Kanda, if Gyan is the ultimate theme of our scriptures?
    • Everyone has different texture and not the same thing will suit to all.
    • Some people do rituals, some do Seva, some don't show up at all.
    • Everyone has different immediate needs, if someone is struggling to make ends meet, it's hard to seek ultimate knowledge. So even though knowledge is ultimate path, there is a path for different to seek materialistic needs as well.
  • There is no separate Bhakti Yoga in Gita. However, Bhakti is the underlying foundation for both Karma Yoga and Gyan Yoga.
  • God is saying here, do the rituals but still continue to absorb in me.
    • e.g. If one organize Satayanarayan puja, don't ask for personal outcome as fruits of that puja.
    • e.g. When a runner run for a Marathon, the goal is not to collect a water bottle or cookies that are offered on the way. Even though they collect them, but don't lose focus on the ultimate goal of finishing the Marathon.
  • Yog Kshema - Not only I will help you to acquire but also sustain.

Yoga

Kshema

Spiritual Growth

Material Success

Acquire

Preserver

Wealth

Happiness

  • Accomplish person behaves the same as un-acommpalished person. He still operates in the transactional world with no attachment. The only thing that changes is in his internal attitude.
    • A quote from Hui Neng, 7th century, Zen Patriarchy fits well here -
      • Before I sought enlightenment, the mountains were mountains and the rivers were rivers. While I sought enlightenment, the mountains were not mountains and the rivers were not rivers. After I reached satori, the mountains were mountains and the rivers were rivers.
  • Subjective Analysis - Moderation and Balance is the key.

    3. Summary - To those people who have turned their mind entirely to me, remember me sincerely, I shall look after their Yoga and Kshema. Most humans, however diff they are, they focus their entire energy in Yoga and Kshema, whether it be wealth or anything else. Even after one acquire the wealth, rest of the energy goes in looking after it (maintaining it).

    3. Summary - Those who are running after these various centers of powere in the society, the community, those who are seeking these other Gods. They also are really seeking me only. All these various mighty powers are given to them by me. e.g. You can go to revenue department to seek a land, but all these departments are getting power from the ultimate Government.

Class Summary for Feb 23, 2025 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-9 Slokas- 18-20

Summarized by: Rajesh

Ch 9, 18-20 videos covered in the previous class

Theme:

  • Our imaginary emptiness cannot be filled (Example given was the person gets a call saying that their car is burning, he goes down running to put it out.  By the time he gets down, he realizes that he doesn’t have a car).  Hence we have to reach the ultimate goal
  • V-20:  How to get what we want?
  • Shear mechanical ritualistic doers go to heaven and Demi god’s world
  • 3 types of pursuits
    • Selfish pursuits (desire based) typically results in HELL (agitation and sorrow)
    • Unselfish pursuits (still desire based) Yagna/rituals results in HEAVEN (peace and happiness)
    • Selfless pursuits (no desires) - reward is like NECTAR

  • Shift in self, not scene
  • Sincerity, Purity, Clarity
  • Go beyond letter to spirit
  • Passive good actions no good

Subjective Analysis:

  • how to be SELFLESS as a Grihasta?

As Grishastas, we have to do the transactional aspects.  We should adjust the attitude that we do these transactions.

Physical sufferings cannot be avoided but mental suffering can be.

Go back and read chapter 2 again (from time to time).

“What you have gotten is from the past, how you face it is in your present” - Swamiji

People will put meditation into it’s own classification for Dhyana yoga, rather than Bhakti, Jnana or Karma Yoga.
