We began out session with a recap of the previous class. We then studied the first 6 verses. We assessed the difference between Karma sanyasa and karma yoga.
Arjuna, still in a state of confusion asks Krishna why he mentioned karma sanyas and also karma yoga. The path of Karma Sanyas seems more comforting to Arjuna.
Karma Sanyas - renouncing worldly activites like Grihastha in order to devote oneself to the path of knowledge.
Karma Yoga - path of still being active in the worldly objects and activites but with the constant dedication of all actions and their fruits to the Lord.
Krishna tells him that though they may seem different they are essentially the same in the sense that both lead to the Lord because both prepare the mind for meditation (which is the final step for attaining Moksha). Both require devotion to the Supreme.
Karma Sanyas (Sankhya) requires a prepared mind that has been able to drop its ego and attachments in order to pursue the path of focussing on gaining knowledge
Karma Yoga is more suitable for Grihasthas like us who have to live and interact in the world of objects but can learn to detach from the ego and stop being the 'enjoyer of results' by adhering to the path of dedication and devotion to God.
In both cases our Gunas will play a part. The playing field of a human is the manifestation of their Guna.
Eg: Swami Shivananda and Pujya Gurudev, both men who performed Karma Sanyas to gain knowledge but then also continued to interact with society for the betterment of society, still dedicating everything to the Lord.
Tapovan Maharaj - who also performed Karma sanyas and essentally remained dedicated to that path instead of re- entering society.
