Class Summary for Mar 19, 2023 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-7: Slokas 20-22

 Summarized by Krishna Prakash:

Recap of Chapter 7 Slokas 17-19

Discussion about Wokeism:

Wokeism was discussed and participants were made aware about the concept and how it is gaining popularity among young adults in schools and colleges. It is about convincing youths that Purana Purushas(like Rama, Krishna) are not perfect and they should not be praised or followed.

This can cause confusion among younger generation and may deviate them from path of Vedanta. Especially when kids growing in foreign countries can be a prey to this false propaganda.

As followers of Gurudev, we need to be careful not to hide the truth, but educate kids that Avatars also made mistakes during some situations. It is because, they were behaving as normal human beings and acted as per rules and regulations which were applicable during that time and it is ok. This should not be projected as a reason not to follow or pray them, because their positive outcomes outweigh those minor mistakes.

Every guru had their own package from previous births and also had experiences from this birth, based on these their teachings were different.

1. Adishankara was doing debates with Buddhist monks during his period.

2. Ramanuja had Muslims and Saivites as challengers and he preached in private to avoid problems from other groups.

3. Madvacharya preached Dvaita in the form of Bakthi

4. In Kaliyuga, when it is difficult to choose between good and slightly good, gurus following different methods. For ex. Gurudev mentioned his motive is to convert hindus to Hinduism as most of us are unaware of Upanishads and people believed that vedas are only for elite people and not for all. So he wanted hindus to be aware of Vedic scripts and spread knowledge.

Slokas - 20-22

Krishna says, wisdom of people with materialistic desires has been looted away and those will be involved in rituals and seeking other gods. If they worship any form with surrender and faith, he will make the faith firm and unflinching.

Example of Kumbakarna was discussed as Devas requested Saraswathi to twist his tongue,so he asked for boon of sleep and god has given him without any questions.

A 3 year old kid will prefer to have a bag of chocolates rather than having dollars  as it doesn't know value of money and its happiness is with chocolates. Similarly, human beings are stuck with materialistic desires without understanding the supreme Brahman. Our goal should be is to reach Brahman which is infinite and not to worldly finite matters.

We should move from Manoranjan(Entertainment) to Atmaranjan (Eternal peace).

Faith - Believing something that we do not know, but keep believing and it will come true one day.

The key is to understand that each god when they refer to themselves as "I", "Me" is nothing but they refer to Surpreme Brahman. For ex. Krishna in Bhagvad Gita, Shiva in Shivapuranam, Vishnu in Vishnupuranam and so on. This is even true in Christianity, Islam and other religions.

These are all different paths to reach ultimate destination "Supreme Brahman" and we should not comment or offend anyone's beliefs.

Ended with closing prayers and meditation.

Class Summary for Mar 12, 2023 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-7: Slokas 17-19

 Summarized by Anand Santhanam:

Recap of Chapter 7 Slokas 14-16

Aarthi -> The one who prays only when in need

Arthaarthi -> The one who prays in advance for his needs

Jigyasa -> The one who is looking for god

Gyani -> The one who knows that self is the god.

Naradha’s interaction with two saints. Once Naradha was travelling in mountains. He comes across two saints. Both asked the same question as to how many more lives they have to take before attaining moksha. For the first saint, he had many more lives. But Naradha tells him that this life is his last life. The saint jubilantly goes away to take care of his worldly pleasures. The second saint was in his last life. But Naradha said that he had as many lives as that of the leaves of the Banyan tree. Then the saint feels good that atleast it is a countable number. The moral of the story is all about perception and mental maturity of the seeker.

The logic of firewood and fire. When the fire starts the firewood initially looks only like a wood and the fire is seen separately. At the process goes on, the first engulfs the wood and the difference is not seen anymore. Likewise, when the jigyasa starts, God is seen as separately and the seeker continues to look separate. But as the Gyani stage is attained, the god and the gyani is seen as the same.

From Jigyasa to Gyani, it may take several janmas.

Bhakthi by itself, is not a sufficient condition to attain self realization. Intellectually, knowing something is different from realizing the god. So how do these stages come together. Sadhana is the most important thing.

The logic of Singer and Tanpura. When the music concert starts, the singer relies totally on the tanpura. During the concert, the singer can sing different ragas and talas but the tanpura is not only essential but also to ensure that there is a smooth transition from one raga to another.

Krishna says that gyani is his favourite.

Brhadaranyaka Upanishad says: Nobody can love anything more than themselves. When the gyani realizes that the self is the god, then the love becomes more realized.

Chapter 18’s last verse says that we should shed all other dharmas and rely only on Krishna. If this message was conveyed to Arjuna in the first chapter, there is no mahabharatha. It takes 18  chapter to understand the meaning of letting go everything.

Class Summary for Mar 5, 2023 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-7: Slokas 17-19

Summarized by Soumya Nair:

Started with anulom vilom and meditation.

Recap & Initial Q&A We talked about the movie and its message. We then went on to discuss the type of Bhakti Arthi, Artharthi, Jigyosu & Gyani In Kaliyuga, the distinction between Good and Not so good is not clear.

Example 1 :
In the civil war General George Washington’s continental army was suffering without proper equipment , housing and clothes. There were about 2000 deaths of his forces due to rampant spread of a disease under a very harsh winter . At this moment when all the possibilities of a victory was looking grim General Washington took to praying. This moment where he was on his knees under a tree and offering a prayer is noted as “ prayer at valley forge”. To quote from the article “the great George Washington on his knees alone, with his sword on one side and his cocked hat on the other. He was at Prayer to the God of the Armies, beseeching to interpose with his Divine aid, as it was His crisis, and the cause of the country, of humanity, and of the world.” After this moment George Washington came up with a new strategy of going for a surprise attack of the enemy position. The attack was only possible crossing the Delaware river under dangerous conditions with his troops and artillery. This is considered a turning point in the war. So what type of Bhakta is the first president of US. The prayer was just not for George Washington but for his army and country. This is between Rajas & Satvic or between Atharthi and Jignasu.

 Example2:
When the Loretto Chapel was completed in 1878, there was no way to access the choir loft twenty-two feet above. Carpenters were called in to address the problem, but they all concluded access to the loft would have to be via ladder as a staircase would interfere with the interior space of the small Chapel. Legend has it that to find a solution to the seating problem, the Sisters of the Chapel prayed to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters. On the ninth and final day of prayer, a man appeared at the Chapel with a donkey and a toolbox looking for work. He asked for 3 months to complete the work and with no interruptions. So the chapel was closed for construction and few Months later, the elegant circular staircase was completed, and the carpenter disappeared without pay or thanks. After searching for the man (an ad even ran in the local newspaper) and finding no trace of him, some concluded that he was St. Joseph himself, having come in answer to the sisters' prayers. Also there were no nails used and the wood that was used is a mystery and not yet traced . This is also an example of Bhakti.

We also discussed the significance of pranayama. There is a yogi who practices Pranayama and has reached the age of 125, researchers were able to conclude that his body is efficient and only uses 45% of energy. Breath control gained by practicing Pranyama was able to improve the efficiency. Some who mastered this can even stop their breath . Even there are instances were people who were declared dead and buried also do came back to life. For animals that hibernate over the winter the process is about the same as the normal functions are shutdown and they are able to sustain with very minimal breathing and metabolism,

Karma Yoga It’s very important to be a practitioner of karma yoga as this is the best way to move forward in our spiritual journey from Aarti bakti all the way to become a Gyani one day.

Chap 7. Verse 17
Of them the wise, ever steadfast and devoted to the One, excels; for I am exceedingly dear to the wise, and he is dear to Me. Shree Krishna says in this verse that those who are seeking God in distress, for worldly gains or out of curiosity, etc. are yet to possess selfless devotion. Gradually in the process of devotion, their hearts become pure, and they realize their eternal relationship with God. Then they develop selfless, exclusive, and incessant devotion toward Him. Now that they have the knowledge that the happiness of the world is temporary and God is the source of eternal bliss, they neither crave for favorable circumstances nor lament over reversals in the world. They become situated in selfless devotion with complete self-surrender. Shree Krishna declares that such devotees are dearest Him.

Chap 7. Verse 18
Noble indeed are all these, but the wise man, I deem, as My very self; for steadfast in mind he is established in Me alone as the supreme Goal.

Chap 7. Verse 19 At the end of many births the wise man comes to Me, realizing that all this is Vasudeva (the innermost self); such a great soul (Mahatma) is very hard to find. It’s not easy to be one with God nor easy to continue on this path to be a Gyani. But we should keep at it and each passing day/ birth we get closer to that goal.

Story:
Sage Narada was not feeling peaceful and to calm his state of mind visits Sanadkumara. In a reply to Sanathkumara, Sage Narada lists all the mantras , all the scriptures he has learned. Santathkumara only replies with “and” . After this goes on for some time finally Sage Narada realizes he has not looked within. He realizes the inward focus was the missing link and then he goes into an intense meditation and thus finds peace.

Dhruva story:
Dhruva was doing intense meditation with his eyes closed and finally God appears and ask him to open his eyes and look at him. Dhruva reponds you are supposed to be inside me and not outside. This shows that Dhruva was a Gyani who understood that he is one with the God/Brahman.

Rajas and Tamas are the attributes associated with evil doers. Increasing sattva is possible by reducing rajas and tamas or those vasanas in our mind and in our body. Thus being Satvic or Virtuous will take us closer to God. Gyani is the best among the Satvic and he is the rarest of the rare and the one who has merged with Brahman or God. And so they attain Mukthi or Moksha

There are 4 kinds of Mukthi.
1.sAlokya – going to the ‘loka’ of the deity worshipped Or Being back to this world
2. sAmeepya – being in the proximity of the deity worshipped Or When we focus our inner self to the higher. Increase our Satvic content.
3. sArUpya – taking on the form that looks alike the deity worshipped Or When we start seeing the higher in everything around us. Eka Bakhtaran
4. sAyujya – getting into the ‘body’ of the deity worshipped or complete merger with Brahman.

We discussed an example of a Mukthi like a Parent anticipating and finally experiencing the return of their Daughter from US on vacation after few years being away from home. The final bliss or Mukthi comes when Daughter is finally before them at the airport.

Narada and the two Rishi’s Narada meets a Rishi in intense meditation. He opens his eyes and Narada gives him a boon. And as the boon the first Rishi wants to find the answer to the question “when am I going to attain Moksha”. Narada does not give an answer then but let the Rishi know that he will get back with an answer . Then Sage Narada continues his journey to come across a second Rishi. This time too he gives the boon and Rishi ask the same question. Narada knows that the first Rishi is going to attain the Moksha in this Janma but the second one has many more births to go through. But to test the Rishis he switches the answers. To the second Sage Narada gives the answer that he will attain Moksha in this Janma hearing which Rishi gets up and start packing. Rishi says he has few things to windup and heads out. Then he approaches the first Rishi and points to a tree and says , you will need as many births as the leaves in the tree. Hearing this the Rishi responds , I am happy atleast I can count the number of births that are left and goes back to meditating. This story shows the state of the mind of the two Rishi’s. The key being the ability to keep the mind under control.

Class Summary for Feb 26, 2023 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-7: Slokas 14-16 continued

 Summarized by Angila Singh:

Started with meditation, anulom vilom.

Initial Q&A

-       Role of mind during meditation. Is the mind constantly engaged in meditation ? The idea is to empower the intellect to ignore input from sensory objects, for example – ignoring the sounds that one may hear during meditation like lawn mowers etc. During meditation one can be in a state that depicts-  “I” am, let “thoughts” be.

-       We talked about the role of Sadhana for the entire family.

-       We talked about Sadguru’s initiative about raising world consciousness. If everyone spends 15 mins a day focused inwards, then a lot can be improved, and this effect will cascade into the masses. It relates to the modern day "me" time concept. Me time doesn’t mean binge watching, tv, phones etc.

Continuing the theme from Ch7 shlokas 14,15 and 16

·         What is Ishwara ?

              Para – Chetna, Nirguna, Nirvikar

             Apara – Achetna, Saguna, Savikar

·         Krishna outlined the human problem

-       Distraction by apara prakriti

-       Looking for happiness in the temporary apara prakriti.

·         Asura – Lowest form of human, no punyam.

·         Sukritan- virtuous-punyam-acknowledge ishwara existence.

We talked about an incident when a monk went to a five-star restaurant and the same monk was begging a few weeks ago, when asked how that feeling was and how he feels now? He simply answered that it was not that bad and this is not that good. Equanimity in both scenarios .

Sukritan Types-

-       Aarthi ( Bhakta in the time of need)

-       Artharthi (Bhakta before doing anything)

-       Jignasu (Bhakta who acknowledges God as a goal)

-       Gyani ( who sees God as himself)

You need an anchor who is rock solid and permanent that is able to help us in troublesome times.

   We watched Gurudev’s Video-

·         Ch7 Verse 14- The boat to cross over maya-

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRBSn5BCFJg

When intellect cannot perceive anything, the mind projects its interpretation just like the snake and the rope example. Because of the mind’s non-apprehension of the higher reality it projects misinterpretations in the world of plurality. This is called maya power. It's very difficult to cross over this.

The remedy for this is contemplation. Contemplation means to turn all mental and intellectual attention towards higher. Through devotion one turns his emotional thoughts towards him and through rational thinking one thinks about the nature of reality.

·         Ch7 Verse 15- Declare your desires

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mBTG02YtokU

There are negative tendencies in us along with positive possibilities. As long as one turns their attention to him its possible to cross over. The Lord gives ample field to exhaust one’s vasanas.

·         Ch7 Verse 16- Four types of worshippers (Part 1 and Part 2)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBrInUxzAJM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QllGzsUci6U

Gunas dictates how one approaches lord. Four types of people come to worship him.

-       Men who are dissatisfied with even the best in life (Arttah). Buddha is an example of this.

-       Seekers of knowledge and understanding, from a mere idle curiosity

-       The third type of worshippers are tamasic, who are transactional.

-       Fourth are the ones who are searching for knowledge of the Absolute.

Class Summary for Feb 12, 2023 - Bhagavad Gita Chapter-7: Slokas 14-16

Summarized by Shivkumar Natarajan:

Why we exhale twice during nadi shodhana
• As per Pranayama we need to expel all our breath. Each person is born with limited number of breath. So optimizing breath lengthen's one life
• When in meditative state we inhale or exhale longer as opposed to shallow quick breaths when mind is excited
• If we imitate/emulate state you reach it. In Ch 2 on SthithaPragnya: Shankaracharya has written that the characteristics of a learned person are practices for rest of the spiritual seekers
• So an example of nadi shodhana  to follow 6 inhale 18 hold 18 exhale 6 hold

We discussed summary of last class
• One fact that was discussed on fasting discussed in previous class was that research shows semi starved mice live twice compared to well fed mice
• We then discussed at depth about ones Prarabdha Vs free will
• Where you are is your Prarabhdha, How you use it is your free will. Intellect/energy/strength is the Lord's but the Purushartha/ ability to choose is yours
• We discussed how in Mahabhartha Krishna speaks to Duryodhana and says you are a prince of great lineage, good family and brought up well; why do you do such horrendous things?; Duryodhana's reply was "Janami dharmam na cha me pravrttih, janamyadharmam na cha me nivrttih; kenapi devena hrdi sthitena yatha niyuktosmi tatha karomi". Duryodhana said, that I do know 'dharma', the right from wrong, but am unable to practice it and  I know whats 'adharma' too, I know very well, but unable to stop doing it; I do, helplessly, what that something sitting inside me prompts me to do
• So elsewhere Krishna primarily faults Bhishma and Dronacharya. They knew what was right but  did not do enough to awaken Duryodhan's free will.  They could have deserted him. Its only with the confidence in their support that Duryodhana was waging this terrible unjust war
• The closer the mind is to a problem the more it gets clouded by it. Maya clouds the mind. Bhagwan Ramana Maharishi has said Free will is a product of Maya. When you are realized then free will is not applicable.  Concept of free will is tied to "I"ness. Our quest is to eliminate the 'I'. Once realized you can claim no free will. In relative reality we live in, free will exists

We then proceeded with discussion of verse 14,15 and 16
• We discussed an example of different perspective where one person sees the beauty of beach and the other person sees salt water
• We tend to relate to things from where one is.
• Hinduism has range based  on ones belief one can follow
• Texture of Gunas playing games
• A golden chain is still binding . Once you recognize the same then you wont let it bind you

Main theme
• We are all chasing desires due to our vasanas
• Krishna indicates that it is difficult to traverse through 3 states of Maya
• The maya is nothing but the illusion (projection) created by us
• We went through a story in Ramayana. When Bharata came with an army to visit Rama to bring him back to Ayodhya. Seeing the dust raised by the army coming nearer to them Lakshmana immediately projected that his elder brother had come to destroy Rama; whereas Rama deduces that Bharata has  come to visit them.
• There is another story where Narada and Krishna (in some story Vishnu) are speaking when Narada insists on understanding what is Maya. Krishna asks for a glass of water and Narada says he will go get it. Narada then reaches a village where he sees a pretty maiden. He then asks for a drink. He then falls in love with her. Follows her to her father the village chief's home and asks for her hand in marriage. Narada then settles into a householder's life. He soon has few kids and even becomes a village chief. One fine day there is a storm and the river floods. Narada build a raft and his family is huddled with him. One by one his kid's lose their grip and fall in the river. In quest to save them his wife and other kids fall in the water too. Narada is grieving for his family when he sees up and Krishna asks him did you get the glass of water. The entire thing had just been an illusion. It was all just Krishna's Maya.
• Shifting the focus from the world to the creator will help
• Here Krishna addresses the bad elements as evil doers and not evil
• We do evil when our desires are not fulfilled. The society is promoting desires
• E.g: Gurudev and Rado watch example. Everytime you see the time you will remember the watch and be thankful about it. But to whom we have to thankful for the hand on which the watch is.
• Desires are due to and imaginary emptiness which will go away when we realize our own fullness
• We need to be ever in Bramhan's knowledge like Bhakta Pralhadha
• E.g: If one is hungry one eats food. If the same person's stomach is full then the same food is not alluring
In same way we need to realize that we are all full (Poorna Madam) and we are not lacking; then we will have no desire.
